Maker, originally from South Sudan had emigrated to Australia when he was eight with his family; before moving to the U.S. as a teen to play high school basketball. Eventually relocating to Mono, Ontario where he finished his high school career playing for Athlete Institute (A.I.). After completing a fifth year at A.I., he declared for the 2016 NBA Draft. Thon was drafted 10th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks.
